Find Your Way
This song was made when I felt completely carefree and just having fun with music.
Find Your Way, for me, was about setting myself free.
At the time, I was planning to leave my hometown and move somewhere different. For the longest time, I'd had this feeling that I could achieve more and that there had to be more for me than the standard day-to-day life I'd been doing. Everything seemed to be lining up and I was just excited.
Then one day, I was minding my business, snooping around the internet looking for inspiration, when I came across the sample that opens the song.
It was too smooth that to pass it up.
So I downloaded it ‘Marxus-ified’ it.
I sped it up, made it pulse, put a simple beat underneath it and rebuilt the bass line so it felt fuller. If you look at the project file, I think there are probably only around five tracks. And I didn't feel the need to add anything else because it just seemed to fit.
Once I had that structure, the whole thing started growing the feelings I already had about the change I was about to go through. I was even more excited. I was feeling confident and I was ready to go.
And then I started talking… mess quite honestly.
The first and second verses’ was basically me saying, I'm off to live my life, you lot can stay exactly where you are, and I'm done worrying about what you think.
For a rare minute, I was really feeling myself and no one could tell me ANYTHING.
Everyone who had done me dirty was going to hear about it. I was leaving, I was moving forward, and I was absolutely convinced that I was destined for something better.

But then, the empath that reared its ugly head, and I started feeling sorry for the people who weren't quite as clear about their direction in life as I was.
And that's where the song started to change.
What began as a bit of a "f you, I'm leaving" anthem became something a little more respectful. I still wanted to make it clear that I was moving on, but I didn't necessarily want to drag everyone else down with me.
The chorus became less about proving someone wrong and more about accepting that sometimes people simply aren't ready to move with you.

Said I'm going away
You can't seem to find it
Finding your way
It's a little too late
I hope you don't mind that I don't want to wait
That became the heart of the song.
I was finding my way, and maybe someone else was still trying to find theirs. And while I wasn't prepared to wait around, I could still wish them well.
There's definitely still an element of “arrogance” in the song and I'm not about to pretend that there isn't - I was feeling myself! But underneath all of that, there was something more genuine about the feeling of finally choosing myself and being brave enough to walk away from what no longer felt right.
The plot twist is that I didn’t actually end up doing the move because of a number of things that had cropped up and happened a few weeks later after writing the song (my arrogance caught up with me) - but that is a story for another time.
However, all in all, Find Your Way is about that moment when you stop waiting for permission to become who you want to be and do what you need to do for yourself.
You just do you.
